On Friday, March 28 Professor Ken Pobo gave a poetry reading in Washington DC as part of the 2014 Split This Rock Poetry Festival. Professor Pobo appeared on the program in a session related to the anthology This Assignment Is So Gay: LGBTIQ Poets on the Art of Teaching (2013), edited by Megan Volpert. The book aims to address the role of teaching in the struggle against homophobia and includes poems by 75 queer poet-teachers from around the world that will serve as a pedagogical tool in the movement to help LGBTIQ youth in crisis. Along with five other poets, Professor Pobo read his contribution to the anthology and discussed his teaching in relation to this issue.
Split This Rock, founded in 2008, is a diverse group of socially engaged poets. Split This Rock calls poets to a greater role in public life and fosters a national network of socially engaged poets. Building the audience for poetry of provocation and witness from our home in the nation’s capital, we celebrate poetic diversity and the transformative power of the imagination.
